More Seminars Coming Our Way

We have gotten still more notices about various seminars in the region pertinent to the greening and mission-based sectors of the economy, so we wanted to continue to share the details on some of the news. The Big Picture remains the opportunity to build networks and gain new skills while the economy might be slowing your daily internal projects.
Let us begin with a reminder: The Nonprofit Technology Network is having its annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia on April 8 through 10. There will be panels and break-out sessions and lots of great networking opportunities. Of course the emphasis is on how technology can help your organization grow. We posted this conference a month or so ago, so we just wanted to present a timely reminder.
On a slightly different aspect of education, we were pleased read a report from the Philanthropy News Digest showing that soft drink companies have indeed followed up on their promises to deliver low-calorie drinks and juice/water options to the schools they service. Though the commercialization of schools remains a problem, as advertisers and corporations look to mold future consumers as much as future leaders, we are glad to see that opportunities for healthy drinks have been added to the mix – and the report points out to the thriving popularity of the healthy drinks among the kids!
Finally, A recent report offered by the National Center on Education and the Economy, Workforce Development Strategies Group, and Wal-Mart concerns ways forward in improving adult education, especially for those who could not yet earn a college degrees. The report stresses the need for comprehensive development of adult education that is built upon the resources and opportunities traditionally offered to undergraduates, but with a clear vision of developing new skills to enrich regional economies:
In a comprehensive Career Pathways learning system, Adult Education for Work would be fully aligned with postsecondary education and training (degree and non-degree technical certificate programs), workforce and supportive service activities (many of which are provided through One-Stop Career Centers), and with regional workforce and economic development strategies, so as to meet the skill needs of existing and emerging regional employers as well as the needs of low-skilled adults.
Perhaps the most dynamic topics among the tweeting and blogging nonprofits are education and expanding opportunities for future growth. We are sure to post more information about conferences, educational studies, and seminars to help your organization achieve its goals. For now, school’s out for the weekend.
