#Interview: Tiffany Applegate, Co-Founder of X Factor Consulting – Enhancing the Sustainability of Nonprofit Organizations
Tiffany Applegate is co-founder of X Factor Consulting, which works to enhance the sustainability of nonprofit organizations. With her marketing degree and MBA, she left the corporate world for the nonprofit sphere, and has been consulting since 2005. The interview was conducted by Don Akchin, a principal of Nonprofit Marketing 360 and a frequent contributor to the MKCREATIVEmedia blog.
MKC: On your website, you focus a lot on sustainability. I thought that sustainability was just a fancier word for fundraising, but clearly you mean something broader than that. Can you tell me about that?
TIFFANY: A lot of people do think that in order to be sustainable they just need money. But we’ve worked with and talked to a lot of organizations that may have an endowment or what they think is a large amount in cash reserves, but things happen and the funds runs out, and since they haven’t focused on sustainability they’re no longer able to survive. We’ve also seen many organizations that have a large government grant, and then when the administration changes, the focus of the grant program changes, so they lose their money and the organization is gone, because they haven’t focused on sustainability.

#Interview: Steve Frillmann, Executive Director, Green Guerillas
This is a repost of an article that originally appeared on the MKCREATIVE blog in March, 2010.
Each month we look at a marketing challenge faced by many of our clients. This month the issue is when, or if, to switch from print to web-based and social media, and we chose to present it through the eyes of one of our clients. We recently spoke with Steve Frillmann, executive director of Green Guerillas, a nonprofit organization that supports hundreds of community gardens (and gardeners) in New York City.
We’ve been working with the Green Guerillas for nearly 15 years, a relationship that began when Marco Kathuria (MKCREATIVE’s Creative Director & Social Media Strategist) volunteered as photographer/videographer for a project working with children to create colorful murals within community gardens in New York City. Out of that relationship came a realization of a “shared DNA” – a commitment to enrich the lives of city residents, one neighborhood at time. The collaboration with the Green Guerillas evolved into the creation of the organization’s graphic identity and communications toolkit. The marketing mix and the strategic direction it has taken has evolved over the years as a result of the close collaboration between MKCREATIVE and Steve Frillmann.
We began our conversation by asking Steve to give us his perspective on how he sees the Social Media:Direct Mail mix for his own organization, considering that converting one’s communications from print to social media channels is all the rage in business and nonprofit circles. But how useful is a great website if the bulk of your constituents visit the Web infrequently, or never? (more…)

#Enviro: Looking For Work? Jobs For Greenbacks And For A Green Mid-Atlantic
The jobs numbers continues to tetter between 9% and 9.3% unemployment, and involuntary under-employment blooms those numbers closer to 20%. If you are searching for work in the Mid-Atlantic region (Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia), The Mid-Atlantic Regional Collaborative (MARC) has been pushing green jobs at their website over the last couple of years – a trend that has been growing across the country over the last decade or so.
The Mid-Atlantic Regional Collaborative MARC should not be confused with the Maryland Area Regional Commuter MARC (though that too has green credentials). The MARC we are referring to allows you to search via keywords, ZIP codes, and commuting radius from your home for a job that is listed as working for the environment and/or making strides to reduce use of un-renewable resources. But the MARC provides more than a listing of some 147 jobs within 10 miles of downtown Baltimore (as of this posting).

Enviro: Deepwater Horizon Disaster One Year Later
The explosion of BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico erupted one year ago today. Eleven workers on the Transocean/Halliburton/British Petroleum were killed, though BP has still managed to avoid investigation into their deaths. The terrible tragedy of 20 April 2010 became the ongoing ecological crisis of the largest oil spill in US waters ever. And the cat-and-mouse game BP and the US government played over the amount of old spewing from the damaged wellhead became the political story of the rest of the summer.
One year later, residents of the Gulf are still trying to recover the economic blow of a lost season of tourism and damage to beaches or wetlands. They also continue to struggle to get the promised compensation from BP. What is the state of the Gulf itself one year on?

Sustainability: Corporate Responsibility = Sustainability?
The MKCREATIVE blog welcomes Maria Lilly, principal of MJLilly Associates LLC, to our blog. She is a communications strategist who develops positioning programs that unite corporate, marketing and financial messages to create and support a company’s brand.
As I canvas the business marketplace, I am thrilled to see the ongoing emergence of corporate responsibility and sustainability as a critical piece of the business lexicon.
Ironically though, there appears to be some confusion about the connection between these two terms. Nomenclature issues and old definitions continue to confuse people – even some professionals working in the space. Let me connect these dots.

Which Cities Were Most Generous Giving Online In 2010?
Lists keep us organized at the store, doing our chores, getting through our work, and letting us know we have capped off one year and moved into the next one. The Chronicle of Philanthropy recently reported on the list of the Top 10 cities giving money online to charities and nonprofits in 2010.
For those who followed the list last year, the top three are no surprise as they were league champions in 2009 as well: Alexandria, Virginia – Cambridge, Massachusetts – and Arlington, Virginia. What might be surprising, though, is that online charitable giving outpaced overall giving and overall expectations about economic growth.

Even In Charity Work: It Takes Money To Make Money

Don't Fear The Overhead
Raising money for your charitable organization takes money. And time. These commodities (along with the office lease and the electric bill and the sticky notes…) are often lumped into the category of ‘overhead.’ Moreover, the category ‘overhead’ is often presented as the antithesis of the charity’s good work for its constituents. But, the Red Rooster Group argues, such self-imposed categories do a disservice to the very charities claiming they have a handle on lowering their overhead for the sake of their charitable work.

Unemployment: Can Social Media Help Improve The Situation?
There is a new group of people who define themselves based on the economic crisis. We’ve had ‘the unemployed,’ ‘the underemployed,’ ‘the seasonal unemployed,’ etc… And for those who are now coming to the end of their extended unemployment support (extended to ninety-nine weeks in the face of the Great Recession): the “Ninety-Niners.” They are people who are about to reach or have just passed that threshold of social support and are still looking for work. What could improve the situation?
